About healthsites.io
healthsites.io is an open, collaborative project building a complete and validated map of health facilities worldwide — to support humanitarian action, emergency response, and equitable healthcare planning.
We work with governments, NGOs, OpenStreetMap communities, and local stakeholders to collect, validate, and publish health facility data as open data on OpenStreetMap — freely available to any organisation, indefinitely.
The Problem We Are Solving
Health facility data is often inaccurate, incomplete, or inaccessible. Existing registries are fragmented across Ministry of Health databases, National Statistics Offices, and OpenStreetMap, with inconsistent naming conventions and coordinates. This constrains the ability of health planners, emergency responders, and civil society organisations to make informed decisions — particularly in underserved and remote regions.
Our Approach
healthsites.io campaigns follow a structured two-stage methodology:
Étape 1 — Validation Campaign A field campaign producing a GPS-verified census of health facilities in a target medical region. All validated data is published to OpenStreetMap — permanently maintained and freely available.
Étape 2 — Evidence and Policy Engagement Taking validated data and applying it to the institutional challenges that determine lasting policy impact: clinical confirmation of priority user story findings, formal data governance interoperability between the National Statistics Office, Ministry of Health, and OpenStreetMap, and evidence-based advocacy to the Ministry of Finance.
What We Have Built
- 150,000+ health facilities mapped globally
- 150+ countries with health facility data on OpenStreetMap
- 1,000+ contributors worldwide
- Field campaigns completed in Senegal, with active campaigns in Mozambique and South Sudan
Open by Design
All data produced by healthsites.io campaigns is published to OpenStreetMap under an open licence — Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. All methods, tools, and datasets are openly documented and freely available for replication by any organisation.
