Maputo — Seeking Funding

healthsites.io is bringing its proven Emergency Health Mapping methodology to Maputo Province, Mozambique — building on a field-tested approach that validated 398 health facilities in Senegal and produced open data that remains freely available today.

Maputo is Mozambique's capital province and its most densely populated region. Despite being the country's economic hub, large parts of greater Maputo lack up-to-date, GPS-verified health facility records — hampering emergency response, resource allocation, and equitable health service delivery.

Why Maputo

  • Capital province with rapidly growing peri-urban population and significant data gaps
  • Existing facility records fragmented across Ministry of Health, National Statistics Office, and OpenStreetMap with inconsistent naming conventions and coordinates
  • Active local OpenStreetMap community with geospatial capacity ready to mobilise
  • Mozambique Ministry of Health engagement aligned with national eHealth strategy
  • Strategic entry point for scaling the methodology across all 11 Mozambican provinces
  • Directly aligned with SDG 3.8.1 — universal health coverage monitoring

What the Campaign Will Deliver

  • A complete, GPS-verified census of all health facilities across Maputo city and province
  • Confirmed service inventories, facility types, and operational status
  • Validated data uploaded to OpenStreetMap — permanently available to any organisation
  • Harmonised dataset bridging Ministry of Health, NSO, and OpenStreetMap records
  • A trained cohort of local OSM validators with ongoing data stewardship capacity
  • Decision-support maps and reports for the Mozambique Ministry of Health
  • Formal engagement with the National Statistics Office on data interoperability from day one
  • A replicable open-source methodology ready for immediate deployment in Nampula and beyond

Budget

The total campaign budget is €75,000, covering four months of activity across all five phases — Human-Centred Design workshops, data audit and reconciliation, geospatial training, field validation, and data publication to OpenStreetMap.

The Broader Opportunity

Beyond Maputo, this campaign establishes the foundation for a national health facility data infrastructure. Validated OSM data is not a project deliverable — it is a permanently maintained national asset that Ministries of Health can present to Ministries of Finance as durable public infrastructure, not a recurring project cost.
